Portable GIS
What's that then?
A pet project of mine
started in 2007
to make it easy to use open source GIS
Why?
RTFM j00 N00b!!!*
*Please read the manual (sir/madam)
It can be hard to install and use
You can't take it home with you
Live DVDs/USBs are sandboxes
Hence Portable GIS!
GIS on a USB
In Windows
With all the hard work done for you
Powered by:
PostGIS/PostgreSQL
QuantumGIS
Grass
Python
OGR/GDAL
Apache
Mapserver
Loader
(Exit to demo)
So how's it done?
Many batch files...
...a hokey GUI scripting language

...and some file extraction software
That's it
So what Sucks about Portable GIS?
Windows User Account Control

ICT Policy

It needs a
FAST
USB stick to run it on
(and it's still quite slow)
Not having enough time to work on it

Not putting it in a repository

What's Next Then?
Anything else?
This talk was brought to you with help from
Big
Presentation software for messy hackers
From Tom MacWright
Questions?
Thanks :-)
